**Before PPF: full decontamination and paint correction are required.** Any swirl marks, scratches, or surface contamination present on the paint when the PPF is applied are sealed in permanently under the film. This is the most common source of PPF results that look imperfect six months after installation: the paint underneath was not corrected first, and the film made the defects more visible by adding a flat reflective surface over them.
The preparation before PPF is essentially the same as the preparation before ceramic coating: wash, iron decontamination, clay bar, paint inspection under lighting, and correction of any surface defects. At a quality studio, this preparation is included in the PPF installation price. If a studio quotes PPF without mentioning any preparation process, the preparation is either not happening or will be charged as a surprise.
**After PPF: ceramic coating is applied over both the film and exposed paint.** Once PPF is installed and cured (typically 48 to 72 hours after application), a ceramic coating can be applied across the entire car: over the PPF on the covered panels and over the bare paint on the uncovered panels. This unifies the surface — both the PPF panels and the paint panels have the same hydrophobic, UV-resistant finish. It also extends the durability of the PPF clear coat layer.
If you want both PPF and ceramic coating, book them together at the same studio. The paint preparation is done once for both services. Booking separately at different studios means paying for decontamination twice and introduces risk that the second studio disturbs the first service.

Does PPF Require Detailing Maintenance After Installation?
PPF does not require the same maintenance schedule as bare paint, but it does benefit from regular care — and the type of care matters.
**Washing.** Wash your PPF-protected car the same way you would wash any car: hand wash with pH-neutral shampoo, rinse thoroughly, dry with a clean microfibre. Avoid automated car washes with abrasive brushes. The abrasive contact damages the PPF clear coat over time, reducing its self-healing capacity and surface clarity. A touchless automatic wash is acceptable; a brush wash is not.
**Self-healing activation.** Minor surface scratches on the PPF clear coat heal themselves with heat. For scratches that occur at night or in covered parking, running warm water over the panel for 60 seconds activates the healing process.
